Railroads gaining steam

Minnesota isn’t the caboose when it comes to rail planning, but it’s far from the front of the line.

When a team of rail experts, Minnesota Department of Transportation officials and state legislators finish work in December on a statewide rail plan, Minnesota will be the 34th state to have a long-range blueprint for developing passenger and freight rail.

The work is being done for a very straightforward reason: The Legislature last year ordered it to be accomplished. There’s also a practical motivation: Federal officials have indicated that money from Washington for rail projects depends on a plan being in place.

Pawlenty signs on to governors' effort to get stimulus money for high-speed rail.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty has formally signed on to an effort by Midwestern governors to grab federal stimulus money to build high-speed rail lines that would fan out from Chicago.

Pawlenty was one of eight governors who sent a letter last week to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood asking for his support in obtaining some of the $8 billion that has been earmarked for rail projects.

Railroads are making more sense nowadays for freight and passengers.

Railroad projects have come to the forefront again as a nation looks for energy saving ways to move goods and people across the vast country that is the United States.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Congressman Tim Walz in a joint statement recently called for a complete study of the state’s rail transportation needs as the state applies for federal stimulus funds for worthy rail projects.

The governor is putting together an advisory group, including Transportation Commissioner Tom Sorel and the Minnesota Intercity Passenger Rail Transportation Forum, to study all potential for future rail projects in the state. Some $8 billion of the federal stimulus bill is targeted to help build high speed rail lines and intercity rail lines throughout the country.
