A statewide college student organization is putting its support behind the proposed Northern Lights Express high-speed passenger train between Duluth the Twin Cities.
“We are looking for ways to be less reliant on automobiles. High-speed rail is a good option for the future of transportation in Minnesota,” said Brian Downing, co-chairman of the University of Minnesota Duluth chapter of the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group.
MPIRG is hosting four news conferences Saturday in communities along the proposed route to illustrate its support.
“This is what we as students want the future of transportation to look like,” Downing said. “We are going to take a position to move forward with the project.” Read entire article here. |

Students belonging to the Minnesota Public Information Research Group (MPIRG), along with community leaders, recently held a press conference about the Northern Lights Express train. According to the group, the Northern Lights Express, a high-speed train, will connect the communities of Duluth, the Twin Cities, and those in-between. It will connect communities to cultural opportunities, provide better access to regional healthcare and make cost effective travel possible between families, friends and travelers alike. Watch an excerpt from a (KBJR) Northland Voices news story about June 2012 changes affecting the Northern Lights Express passenger rail project, with Barbara Reyelts (moderator), Steve O'Neill (St. Louis County commissioner), Ken Buehler (NLX Technical Advisory chair). The Anoka County Board, one of the founding partners in the Northern Lights Express Alliance, pulled out of the group in June and withdrew future funding. Some feel that could end the rail project to Duluth, but the Northern Lights Express Alliance is confident the project will press on with state and federal funding and public support.

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Much is being done about bringing the Northern Lights Express to Duluth.
Although the name might suggest a trip to the North Pole, it's actually a high speed rail system traveling between Duluth and the Twin Cities.
"Just try to get this thing moving as fast as we can," said Brian Downing, a member of the Minnesota Public Interest Group.
The project was one of 22 successful applicants picked in May of 2011 to receive a 5 million dollar grant from the U.S Department of Transportation.
